Stone Sentinel A Beautiful Monsters Story BeMo Vol 35 eBook Jex Lane

I don't read any Christmas stories because I can't stand fluffy happy books with snowball fights and cocoa around the fire but THIS story was perfect!
The whole story is Jets pov and it was awesome and funny to see everything through his eyes. Tarrick and Sam were helping save Christmas so they spend time together and it was great seeing them interact more with each other. There's a few little hints at stuff to come and some of it scares me now more than ever but it's rare I come across such a well written series of books that suck me in this much so I'll happily keep reading until the end.

Stone Sentinel A Beautiful Monsters Story BeMo Vol 35 eBook Jex Lane Reviews

This short novella packed a punch. I devoured it in 4 hours. I loved the glimpses of what is going on with Matthew, Devak and Tarrick's relationship dynamic while Matthew is overgoing his transformation, Devak is trying to keep him grounded and Tarrick is trying to strengthen their insurgency. Hints about future pivotal plot developments are such a gift while we wait for the 4th volume. The interactions between Jet, Sam and Tarrick was such a pleasure to read, and I just love how Sam is able to call Tarrick on his bs. The story has action, adventure, spot on comedy and action and I Loved it!
I loved seeing the characters through Jet’s eyes. This novella bridges the gap between Broken and Blood Prince by giving us some info about what is happening with Matthew without dragging us through... seeing the characters from Jet’s POV is fun. Sam is so sassy, Tarrick is indulgent with her and we see some of Tarrick’s pain at being separated from his son, Tarquin. It’s a fun story set around saving Christmas. I’m hoping Jex Lane will continue to write more BeMo novellas themed around holidays, such as Valentine’s Day, Halloween, etc... since all of the main books in the series are from Matthew’s POV, it would be fun to see a little slice of life from other character’s POV. If you haven’t read this series, start with book 1, Captive, before reading this. You won’t be sorry! It’s a series that pulls you in and doesn’t let go!
I guess I’m the odd one out since everyone else seemed to love this book, but I’m generally not a big fan of extra novellas/shorts in the middle of a series that are told from a side character’s POV. But I saw it noted somewhere (I thought it was in the blurb, but it’s not there now, so I’m not really sure) that this one is necessary if you want to understand everything in the series, so I read it anyway. Was it necessary? Without having read the whole rest of the series, I don’t know. It might add something, but it’s probably not absolutely necessary.

Anyway, it was a fun idea writing this from the POV of Jet (a gargoyle), but one issue I had was that the voice felt off. Sometimes it sounded childish, other times it sounded mature, the word choices didn’t match up with each other, etc. It kept distracting me from the story in the beginning. But once the story picked up more, it kind of evened out because the writing got more focused on the actual stuff happening rather than Jet’s own thoughts.

This author’s portrayal of gargoyles is pretty cool though! They’re a very not-human type of gargoyle, so it was neat getting to learn more about them, their lives, and their abilities. That was my favorite thing about this novella.

I also loved Sam’s diatribe against Tarrick because I feel the same way. I’ve warmed up to Tarrick a bit, I see some good in him, and I do kind of ship him and Matthew, BUT I still don’t know if I forgive him for the things he did, and I still feel like Matthew’s love for him is more like Stockholm Syndrome. I was glad to see that those things weren’t actually overlooked, that other characters feel the same way even if Matthew doesn’t.

Overall, this wasn’t as Christmassy as I thought it would be from the blurb, and I can’t say it’s my favorite in the series, but it wasn’t bad. Learning about the gargoyles was interesting, and I’m sure plenty of people will love the chance for a fun, quick trip into the series from a side character’s POV.

I never in a million years thought I’d love these books because of the genre of romance. Not a fan of M/M, but I love paranormal stories and romance books. The action and unpredictable story lines where wonderful. Paranormal books can do anything because of the fantasy. I’ve read all five books from this series and I haven’t been disappointed yet.

My only concern is the series won’t end and will continue like similar authors who’ve had a big hit. I’m a fan now, but would like for an end in the next book, which is number six or 4 if you look at it from Matthew’s story.

What I like most about this book is the gargoyle protective nature. The fight, the laughter, the commitment to helping those you are to protect at any cost brings you closer to the characters. This story has unlikely heroes and twists and turns. A male hero who likes anyone, or better yet, any creature. Who’s true love interest is another male. Who would’ve thunk it. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Nevertheless, this series is worth reading.

I’d suggest opening your mind to something that is not really in your comfort zone. I did and this book like the rest where exciting and kept my attention.

Pros
Well written.
Tarrick is a hero, sexy, and an alpha.
Story within the story.
Funny at times.
Keeps you interested with the plot twists.

Cons
Maybe the next book should be the last. I’d hate for such a great series to become too much.
