First let me say that the grammar and spelling in this book were horrible and distracting! OMG, a 5th grader could write better than this! Where are the editors? This should have been a .99 special, instead of $2.99! I feel like I was ripped off paying so much for this "draft" copy. Shame on you Amazon for allowing these books in your library! Now to the story: I liked Alice and her relationship with her aunt and the love they shared. I also liked Jake and thought he should have stood up to his dad and not let him force a marriage on him. If he had feelings for Alice he should have declared himself and married her instead, particularly after his dad died. I also liked Helen and David and thought that Alice and David made a great couple. With death all around them I can understand the quick marriage and not to waste a day. I think that it was a sweet story, but too much of the book was spent in Massachusetts and not enough time in Kansas building up the love story for Alice and David. The letters back and forth from Richard were sweet, but should have been not been made the main storyline since he didn't make it. More time should have been spent building up David's story and growing love for Alice. Needs some work on this story Claire/Karolyn. While you are at it fix your other books in this series. They are all plagued with the same crappy grammar and spelling and editing snafus.Tags : A Romance West (A Mail Order Romance Novel) (6) (Alice & David) (A Mail Order Romance series) - Kindle edition by Claire Charlins, Karolyn James. A Romance West A Mail Order Romance Novel Alice David A Mail Order Romance series edition by Claire Charlins Karolyn James Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I really enjoyed the whole series of books including this one. It is hard to imagine how mail order brides overcame so much and yet were so brave and adventurous. This book adds a new twist as when she FINALLY gets to her destination she finds that her husband to be has died. With no family and no friends she must trust someone she just meets to give her shelter.
Life changes so quickly sometimes when we least expect it. Fascinating story of how things could go wrong and you suddenly become a mail order bride. You arrive thinking you'll finally meet your husband only to find he has died. Twist and turns in this story well written ,God always makes a way. You'll enjoy this book .
I had high hopes for this book, but as the story progressed, I became disappointed in it. A lot of time was spent setting up the story of her trip to the West. Once she got there, it sort of fizzled. It's like the author was hitting a deadline and had to finish up the story quickly. I would have liked it better if she had spent as much time fleshing out the second half of the book as she did the second.
The heroine didn't even begin traveling until 58% of the way through the book. I gave it 2 stars because structurally, the writing was good. This was just the most BORING book I think I've ever read. Timelines and feelings and such just seem odd. Dialogue is bland.
Overall, I would recommend passing on this one.
I caution everyone--DO NOT READ THE italicized synopsis at the front of the book before Chapter 1. If you do, you might as well not read the book. It gives way too much information about the entire story. I will not make that mistake again. Very sweet story of love following much tragedy in a young life. I enjoyed the characters and the message. Will read more by these authors.
I need to keep a list of authors not to read. This one would be on it. Forgetting I read a couple others by the same author, it came back to me very quickly when this story started sounding very similar to another book in the series. Not a lot of variation in characters or setting. This book also had a lot of errors, the story was simplistic and basic, the characters lacking.
The one bedroom scene was stiff and unemotional. Alice fell in love at the drop of a hat. I really couldn't find any redeeming qualities to this story. If you're looking for a good historical romance about mail order brides, this isn't it.
I love Mail Order Brides books, but this one is disappointing.. No depth. Sounded like a teenager wrote it. Spelling and grammar were horrible. Also, the definition of "widower" is "a man that has lost his wife." Ms. Charlins listed the character of Helen as a widower. At first I thought it was a mistake in spelling since there had been so many. "You're a widower, aren't you?" "Helen had become a widower after her husband died." And on it went. Had the book been full length, I would have tossed it aside. Since it was a novella, I chose to finish it. I don't plan to purchase any more books by this author. I would rather spend my time reading "Shakespeare." He makes more sense.
