First off, may I say - "Read Danker's Review." It is very well written and covered a lot more than I will cover in my own review.I put off reading this book for at least a year because I wasn't absolutely sure that I could enjoy reading about Michael based on his decision to stay away from his wife for nine long years, at first fighting in the war against France and then the last two years hanging out in London doing Lord knows what while the young wife he left behind worked endlessly on behalf of his "Lairdship" and his tenants.
But, on occasion, the bits and pieces I had read would crop up in my mind, I would be intrigued by the book's description, so last night I finally decided to search the book out and read it for myself. I couldn't remember the name of the book or the author, but a question posed on the Romance Forum brought an answer in about five minutes. It's amazing how well some folks remember what they've read.
What to say except that even if I had not known who the author was, I would have recognized it as a Burrowes' book. Michael was straight from the stereotypical male hero types that Burrowes writes about over and over and over - tender, caring, considerate of his woman, putting her emotions and well being ahead of his own desires. Except, how could such a caring man leave his young wife without the marriage being consummated and go off to war, barely writing her any letters during that time and then spend two years in London after he returned without visiting his wife and home in Scotland? At all? Even after his father died and he became Laird?
The backstory takes the entire length of the book, but of course we are given bits and pieces early on and we know there's a villain but exactly what may be laid at his feet? Surely, not even this villain could be part of the reason Michael stayed gone so long with hardly a letter? Some answers are not given until the last few pages of the book. And yet, I agree with another reviewer who mentioned that a few more details might have provided the reader with more reason to let bygones be bygones. Still, I was never fully reconciled to some of the behaviors based on the reasons given. This book kept my attention, both Michael and Brenna were great characters. The St. Clairs were a plus and now I'll need to read their story as well.

The Laird Captive Hearts Grace Burrowes 9781402295027 Books Reviews
I almost gave up on Grace Burrowes after a few books I didn't much care for and now I'm a fan again. This book was all that I love in a great romance
* Great writing - the reader is kept wondering through much of the book
* Strong and believable characters written with depth
* A storyline with twist and turns, heart break and heart mending
* An important topic underlining it all, but dealt with in a credible and respectful way
* Love that can stand nine years of separation and still be strong
* A hero who sees the heroine for who she is and loves her just like that - and a heroine who manages the impossible without losing herself.
A wonderful book.
I haven't read the two first books in this series. This one worked well as a stand-alone.
Book 3 – The Laird – This was another heart-wrenching book that fit with the series, but could easily stand alone. The author moves the setting to Scotland, uniting Michael with his maiden bride from ten years earlier. After spending years warring for the English and failing to return home at all during that period, Brenna is dubious about her husband’s return. Michael has a lot of making up to do before he takes his bride as wife, and it appears that there are some hostile undercurrents flowing among his people. Every step forward is going to be a battle for Michael, and he hopes to find an ally in Brenna. Will they come together against common foes, or will the household split, with both living separate lives under the same roof? There are definitely undesirable and potentially disturbing sections in this book, but it is very real, and another great read.

Ms. Burrowes with The Laird has created a soul grasping story. Michael Brodie has the patience of Job. This one man loved for real and intensely so. He returns home to Scotland after 9 years away to his wife, Brennan Maureen Brodie. They both have much to overcome.
I applaud Ms. Burrowes for taking on topics that make you flinch and squeeze your heart. Where others might not want to shed light on these types of issues, Burrowes is brave and creates resilient characters, that suffered and learned to overcome, whether on their own or with help. I found several times while reading, that my heart ached, not wanting it to be so, but it was. I cried for the topic and the emotions Ms. Burrowes layed out page after page. You felt for Brenna, Michael and all others who suffered. I loved that Ms. Burrowes included old friends because it was so good to have Sebastian St. Claire and Milly along for this touching journey. So many emotions enveloped my heart and soul throughout and I was grateful for the author allowing me the ability to heal along with her characters before the story was over.
Great story.
Michael Brodie left his new bride to fight a war that took years to finish, even after it did he still stayed away but now he is back home and is surprised his wife Brenna is not happy to see him. Brenna put up with nine years of gossiping about why her new husband would walk away the day after they married, the rumors swirled whether he was alive or dead for years and now he is back Brenna is ready to walk away from the marriage but Michael wants there marriage and plans to woo his wife. Can Brenna trust Michael and can they have everything that he is promising?
There is a whole part of the story about Brenna that gets uncovered while the story progresses which was surprising. I thought this was excellent, going to have to go back and read rest of series. Brenna you get where she is at with Michael and I felt sorry for him but felt like he owed it to Brenna to regain her trust. Liked the pacing of this story, very entertaining.
