Do you remember reading books as a child or having them read to you at bedtime? Have stories read to me was an incredibly formative experience and I remember vividly colors or particular pages and rhymes from those bedtime reading moments. While I wish this book was available to me as a child, I love it as an adult too!!! The poetry is some of the most beautiful out there woven together thoughtfully, and the illustrations....they make up for the thousands of times I have been disappointed by the lack of imagination in books pictures. Its beautiful Naive where the pictures are drawn through the eyes of the child, and incredibly detailed everywhere else! Its a beautiful book. Beautiful is a word not to be used lightly...
On May Day, a girl goes for a walk around her rural village, stopping by farms and streams along the way. At her stops or sightings of creatures, related poems are shared.

This is part fictional story part nature poetry collection. Nature lovers should really enjoy it. I'm not sure how the average modern middle grader will do in reading the cursive script used for the text of the girl's story as it is made to look like a girl has written it in a scrapbook and it isn't always super clear. I really enjoyed the poems of Ted Hughes in this, a poet I wasn't super aware of before.
My granddaughter loved it.
Beautiful illustrations, original poems, imaginative story and feels great in your hand. Makes you want to sit down in a large easy chair and take a hike in the woods at the same time!
