Ghost Town Rachel Caine 9780749008048 Books Reviews

I haven't read a Morganville Vampires book in a while and I'd forgotten how much I enjoy this series. I like the balance of the characters, how no one is completely good or completely bad and most of the time you can't figure out what side of that line they're even leaning toward. I had moments while reading this book where I loved and other moments when I hated just about every character.

The only character who I consistently hate, and the only thing keeping me from giving this book a five star rating, is Monica Morrell. Every time I see her name on the page, I grind my teeth. I'm sorry to say it but I'm so tired of this character I just can't stand it. She's so consistently ridiculous. She's more than served her purpose in the story and everyone else in this series has long since outgrown her antics. I feel like one of the vampire would have eaten her by now just to make her go away. Hell, I feel like they would have let her leave town just to get rid of her at this point. She serves no purpose in the story, in my opinion, and I really don't understand why she hasn't just faded into the background. Every scene she was in in this story felt forced, like Ms. Caine was writing her in just for the sake of having her there.

That being said, I loved everything else about this book. As the memories started to go, there were some really beautiful scenes. The scenes between Shane and Claire are particularly good. It's just so heart breaking and really shows off Claire's strength in that she's able to keep moving forward in spite of bleeding inside. And I particularly liked that he still fell for her even without their shared history. It kind of validated that their relationship wasn't just based on circumstances and high stress situations.

I'm also very intrigued by the developing dynamic between Amelie and Oliver, as well as the changes in Myrrin. The way they work together, and don't work together, is fascinating. We learn so much about them in this book by getting to see glimpses of them from before the series started. Over the course of the series we've been focused primarily on how the Glass House characters have grown and changed, and in this book Ms. Caine showed us how much those same events have impacted the vampire characters. I loved it and I can't wait to see where this power struggle goes next.
This ninth book in the Morganville Vampire series by Rachel Caine was all that I've wanted for the last several months. I mean, come on, what could be better than sexy, vicious, homicidal creatures. Yeah, yeah, I'm sure you could think of many things better, but not me.

So you can imagine my enjoyment of this book at the prospect of more vampires. That, and more Michael and Shane. *prrrr*

Plus, the totally bipolar/homicidal Myrnin is one of my all time favorite characters. His attire never ceases to amaze me.

Technically, this series could have closed off after book 7, but what would the fun be in that. And this book proved that there was more story to tell. We get a more gracious glimpse of the shmexy Shane in all his lickable glory as we do of Michael in his high school days of yore (cool word, yore!)

Our dearest Clare is at the top of her game trying to solve the most recent dilemma of memory loss. I've always loved Clare as a character. I think it's the fact that not only is she brilliant; she is strong and not prone to whining. I cannot stand whining. Girls who fail in the face of true hardship are a discredit to the race of female.

Wow, I'm harsh lately, especially on my own race (I blame Hubby *smiles*)

Clare though is not our only lovely female, we also have the beautiful, rice powdered goth, Eve. Her jabs at Shane are classic and her brutally honest nature is covetable in an ally. Plus, her fashion sense is quite awesome!

All in all, the characters were exactly what I needed and much more. In addition the plot was entertaining and electrifying. Because there is nothing like conniving, murdering vampires, hot sexy men, scientifical machines that control space and plenty of bedazzled stakes to make anyone happy.
Book 9 in the Morganville Vampire series, Ghost Town, finds our quartet of friends--Claire, Shane, Eve, and Michael--in hot water once again, naturally. Just when it seems some relative normality may settle into their lives, Eve becomes involved in an out of control party in which vampires are killed. When the others arrive to help, Claire herself kills a vampire--and in Morganville, it's a life forfeited whenever that happens. But luckily (?) for Claire, Amelie sentences her to a non-stop session with Myrnin to restore Morganville's damaged defense mechanism, a task almost sure to fail. And it does, of course...but not quite in the way imagined.

Ghost Town is another spectacular entry in the series, with the fearsome foursome battling forces within their borders that threaten to not only destroy Morganville but their relationships as well. Caine does a terrific job of keeping the storyline moving, throwing us twists and building danger until I literally could not put the book down. I love the relationship between Claire and Shane; their honest, loving encounters bring new dimensions to both characters while giving us enough romance so that it's not all just about the sex. I admit to getting angry with both Oliver and Amelie; they have always been many shades of gray but this book takes their deviousness to new levels. And Myrnin...my favorite! Poignant and funny, I just want to spend more time with him. And from our cliffhanger ending, it looks like I'm going to get my wish. A lot of fun and highly recommended!
