A Very Large Expanse of Sea Tahereh Mafi Books
This book is about a Muslim girl named Shirin who has recently moved to a new highschool. As a Muslim girl who wears a hijab, she is ridiculed daily as being a terrorist. Just a year prior, 9/11 took place and she was continuing to deal with the backlash and the consistent prejudice that many muslims experienced during that time.Shirin meets a boy named Ocean who finds her fascinating and decides to take his time getting to know her. After isolating herself she opens herself up to him. Shirin and Ocean have this deeply raw and emotional relationship and I'm completely obsessed with it. Whats more is that he was a really likable character throughout.
This book spares no punches as Shirin is a raw and angry teen just trying to survive in a hostile highschool setting. I felt so much for her and this was framed perfectly. You didn't just learn this character, you learned all the things in her environment that made her who she was.
This book added so much to the facts of prejudice of muslims after 9/11. This gave, what felt like, an emotional first hand account of trying to navigate high school as a Muslim after the destruction of the two towers. I felt like Shirin was someone I could know in real life and interact with. She jumped out of the book and became more than just a character.
This book also gives a strong nostalgic nod to this era in her musical play list. With songs like Whenever, Wherever by Shakira and Pardon Me by Incubus. It really set the tone for the time the book took place in and was a nice touch.
I can't help but sing praises for this and without hesitation I gave this a 5/5 stars.

A Very Large Expanse of Sea Tahereh Mafi Books Reviews
After about chapter 5, I couldn’t put this book down. I bought it based on a review I saw on Twitter, and it was so worth it. I will definitely pa it along to all of my friends. Books with diverse characters that we can relate to are so important.
A Very Large Expanse Of Sea has brought horrible truths to light with a beautiful love story. Tahereh Mafi proves yet again to be one of my favorite authors with her poetic voice and moving characters.
Loved the honesty and perspective from a teen who feels different from everyone else. Mafi points out multiple social issues, including interracial love, discrimination against Muslims and hijabi women, and gives a lighthearted but accurate depiction of Persian parents.
I don't know what I expected from this novel, but it wasn't what I thought I would get. A Very Large Expanse of Sea felt.. cliche, which is hard to say about a situation that's based in truth. I'm not one that typically reads non-fantasy YA but I felt that it was important to give this book a shot. I'm glad I did, because the story was a fulfilling read.
I didn’t read this book myself, so this is a secondhand review. I gave it as part of a bookstagram book swap and the lady who asked for it loved the book. I know it has been getting really good reviews and the synopsis sounds very intriguing.
This book was so well written in the character that’s it was trying to showcase. Shirin’s voice and her personality came through amazingly. The story was riveting and everything was so unexpected. I recommend this to people who often hate characters in books to the point where it becomes I enjoyable and impossible to read. I’m so excited to read more books from this author.
I love Tahereh's writing. This is so different than anything else she's ever published, and yet it still has that same infused passion and emotion and beauty of language. This book kept me awake until 2am two night in a row. A beautiful and heart-wrenching time capsule that captures a difficult and complicated era and feels deeply personal and immediate in the writing - I would describe this as near historical fiction more than contemporary.
